What is skin PH?

PH stands for "potential of hydrogen."  This word must have been discussed in your chemistry lesson back then. To put it another way, it measures the number of hydrogen ions present in any given element. A pH scale ranges from 1 to 14, with 7 being termed "neutral." Below 7  Numbers are classified as acidic and above 7 are non-acidic. Your skin has a typical pH of 4.7. The idea is that by changing the pH, you are also changing how healthy the skin is. The vaginal region, underarms, and other less visible places frequently have a higher acidity. While your hands, face, and chest, are more alkaline.

Why keeping PH balance is important?

Your skin produces sebum and breaks down fatty acids, forming the acid mantle also called the skin barrier. By preventing any pollutants and bacteria from hurting your skin, it is in charge of keeping it clean and hydrated. Your skin gets dry and sensitive when your acid mantle is overly alkaline. This typically occurs if you switch out your skin care products too frequently. Our skin should ideally have a mildly acidic pH. Therefore, if it is between 4.8 and 6, your skin is healthy. PH-focused cleansers, toners, and moisturisers have begun to overtake the beauty market to help get beautiful skin.

How to maintain your skin PH?

Here are a few tips for keeping balanced skin pH.

  1. Use gentle cleaners: Never wash your face with bar soap, and stay away from harsh chemical-containing cleansers. Select skin care products with pH control. You can treat acne if your pH falls below 6, so using more acidic cleansers may benefit you.  When washing your face, always use tepid water.
  2. Use a toner: Skin can be toned and made tighter by cleansing the face with a toner. Even if you can't afford expensive toners you can make one at home. Your skin's pH levels can be perfectly controlled by using apple cider vinegar but before using vinegar on your face dilute it with water. Skin toner can significantly assist in removing any alkalinity that might be detrimental to the skin's ideal pH levels.
  3. Check your home water PH: Your skin is affected by water too! Your skin and scalp may always feel itchy if you have hard water coming into your home.  Water that is gentle, non-alkaline, and low in minerals is the greatest for skin pH. A water softener that balances the PH of the water is something that householders should think about if their skin condition gets disturbed by hard water.
  4. Moisturize: Both your face and skin need to be moisturised. After getting out of the shower, immediately apply a soothing, balanced body lotion. Your skin needs to be moisturized regularly to stay healthy. Your skin will stay moisturised and contribute to repairing its moisture barrier if you use moderate lotions and oils.
  5. Add antioxidants to your diet: We are aware that lemons are a good source of vitamin C and that this vitamin is essential for health. Drinking lemon water first thing in the morning will help your body cleanse itself. In addition to gently balancing skin pH, just 1-2 tablespoons in a glass of room temperature water will hydrate and energise your body for the day while also leaving your skin healthy and bright!
  6. Use sun protection: Regular sunscreen application is essential for preserving your skin's pH balance and protecting it from additional harm. Apply sunscreen every day before going outside into the sun using a broad-spectrum SPF solution. This will help in fighting wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and dark spots.
  7. Healthy eating habits: To reduce the acidity of your diet, try adding more fruits, healthy grains, and green vegetables. A diet that supports the pH of your skin can assist to lessen acne outbreaks and other health concerns.
